25/26 Mexico Week 7a (Jan 27-28) – Enjoying Durango, the capital of the Durango state

A few weeks earlier we visited Chihuahua capital. Now we were close to the capital of Durango state—also called Durango. We had to pay it a visit. In larger cities, the first order of business is always shopping: replenishing food supplies and tracking down special necessities.

Whmm, I am not drinking this one – toxins, venom, berries, snakes, I am staying away.
And some music of course

Only then did we focus on the city itself. Durango was founded by Francisco de Ibarra in 1563 and is known for its 17th- and 18th-century architecture. It was cool once we finally found it.

We liked the city center so much that we got a parking ticket. There was no information anywhere about paid zones. Chester writes in his blog what happened next.

And then we were on our way to Cerro Gordo (3355m), the highest peak of Sierra Madre Occidental.

At the outskirts of Durango we were stopped at a police checkpoint. Surprisingly an officer knew about Cerro Gordo and was not shocked that some gringos wanted to climb it. Amazing! Beyond the city limits, the road became completely empty, which was a relief—because by then it was totally dark. We broke the rule driving at night and we prefer not to do that.
