2025-01-20 Baja – Volcan Las Tres Virgenes (1951m)

Volcán Las Tres Virgenes is one of 3 ultras in Baja California. I really wanted to get this one. Why? Just because it is there I suppose. The highest peak in Baja would be too far for us to consider on this trip.

Three Virgins Volcano

We drove from La Paz to Puerto Escondido and met our new friends, The Yukoners.

Kate and Ian gave us a tour of their boat. Super special for us, the land people.
They also showed us a great location to camp. In the morning we enjoyed our coffee spiced with colourful sun rise.

The following day we resumed our drive from Puerto Escondido to the base of 3 Virgins.

Daily inspection? Not at all, we just talked about having a bigger gas tank and Chester investigates.

I was a bit concerned about the 3 Virgins access. In couple of trip reports I read that if you come across vigilantes they ask you to get a guide. As such we did not see any written info about it, and none of the signs we came across stated such requirement but who really knows what the rules are.

Our plan therefore was simple. Drive to the trail head, grab our ready backpacks and go. And to make the trip less strenuous split it into 2 days.
Our Desigual at the trail head
I am grateful for GPS tracks. It would be difficult even to get to the trail head, and terrain is big here.
Thanks to GPS tracks we easily find a wash and follow it up.
It goes up ever so gently that we barely feel we are gaining elevation.
With little daylight left time to find place for our tent. Chester flattens the spot.
The night is dead quiet.
The morning after we get up, pack, no coffee for breakfast as we left our stove and pots in the car. We hide our gear and start going up, and up, and up.
We admire fabulous inversion.
I can’t say it’s easy, but it’s not bad either. Combination of vegetation, steep slop, sliding surface require energy.
Chester is always ahead of me, me dragging my butt behind…,

Finally the ridge, vegetation change.
We reached the first bump, another 300m or so up.
Water!!!! Electrolytes!!!
Sometimes we encounter bigger rocks, and sometimes we enjoy scrambling them to contrast pushing through thorny vegetation
Wow, we are here, 1450m later!!!!! Huray!
Amazing views
We celebrate with freeze dried hummus.
I find a register! Mostly Spanish entries, but confirms this peak gets climbed.
We don’t linger on the summit – a long way down ahead of us
The world around us is magical- even cirios trees got here.
So great to scramble every now and then
And to rest
We reach our car in the darkness. This is the photo next morning, showing our peak.

As we were approaching our car the wind picked up. It blew at night but in the morning it was even stronger. It blew for several days thereafter. We were so lucky to get the peak. The wind would not make it possible for several days after. Thank you God of the Winds to make us reach the summit!!!!
