2025-01-05 Baja – Cerro Blanco and beyond

We could see the beautiful outline of Cerro Blanco from far away.

Its slopes reminded me of Africa – light coloured granite boulders sprinkled its slopes – big enough to be visible from far away. We could also see white objects cresting the summit. Maybe somebody built a small chapel, not common but yet not unusual here in Mexico.

The road we were driving was not on the map but it continued to be amazing, climbing high up and then dropping down to the valleys where we would sporadically come across more ranches.

In front of one ranch we came across this giant tree.
And free range chicken and turkeys. Chester continues to prove that all animals here eat tostadas.
Road is shared here. These two cows would not let us pass for a while.
We stop for night in another magical place. There is just enough place to park off the road.
Another spectacular tree just by our camping spot. Light is quickly disappearing. We have just enough time to fly the drone up the mountain. Seeing the route from the drone makes us think that despite the combination of nasty vegetation and big granite boulders we should be able reach the summit. It’s not very far.
Time to relax and take it in.
Next morning, as soon as the light is good we go up. Chester finds little trails that allow us to move up quick through this inhospitable terrain.
Sun appears on the horizon
Ridge is easy. We reach the top in an hour.
And here a surprise. Not a chapel but two massive granite blocks crest the summit of Cerro Blanco. Granite is smooth as in Joshua Tree National Park, USA.
No way we can climb them without protection, at least not me. This is a photo of one of them.
Sometimes you just don’t make the summit – but these are summits you remember. 😉
We admire beautiful views, and enjoy internet connectivity from here. Then we go down.
At the car time for a snack. Everyone likes toastadas 😀
We continue to explore the unmapped roads (there are 2 branches). We know we could push farther but it is a risk being so remote, on our own, with so few spare car parts.
Time to head back.
We stop Desigual at the high pass, 960m and I hike up the high point above it. It is only 40 metres or so above the road but presents a usual miserable vegetation.
And another boulder on the top. Darn it!
This one is much lower than the boulders on Cerro Blanco, but still smooth surface, and beyond what I want to do. Another failed summit of the day 🥲
Let’s go to the beach instead. We crossed back to the Pacific coast about 20km north of Todos Santos. Beaches around Todos Santos are beautiful, sandy, and stretch for kilometres.
The day ends as it started, with an amazing display of light.
