2024-12-17 Baja – Mesa de Oscar Ascent 815m

We finished our January 2024 trip with a few hikes in Sierra la Giganta. We started our December 2024 here, this time equipped with mini machete.

Mesa de Oscar was named after ‘el hombre Oscar’ who had a romance with an aunt of our host Rudolfo, rancher from the Nueva Santa Rosa ranch, located just below the peak. Oscar spotted the aunt from the peak, and the rest is history. It was a long time ago.

Rudolfo, the rancher whose aunt had something to do with Oscar. Rodolfo carries a serious machete in these mountains.

We picked Mesa de Oscar as our destination, not to spot Rudolfo’s aunt, but to allow Rudolfo’s goats to come back to his ranch from the mountains. His goats return home to feed their new born babies every few days, unless something scares them away. We were not going to keep mother goats from their babies and picked an area outside of goat’s whereabouts.

Vegetation was not too bad
Our favourite Cardons accompanied us for a while
As we climbed up the route became harder, rock smaller, looser. It also got hotter.
This was the only flower like this. Behind a ridge we had to reach. From the ridge on the terrain mellowed. At this point we were still unsure it it let us through.
Chester leads the way. There were couple of short class 4 sections, but rock was solid on them
We reached the ridge, while Cardons did not. Instead we were greeted by healthy size agaves.
On the summit Chester flew Iga’s drone.
View from the summit
It is beautiful here. We sat on the summit for over an hour
I had to go to another high point, as I was not sure which one was higher – no way I would miss the summit 😀
We picked a better route down. We followed a gully. Less vegetation, better rock.
Gully
Rudolfo treated us to an amazing dinner.
And then it was time to go, leaving Rodolfo’s beautiful rancho, Rancho Nueva Santa Rosa, named after his mother, Rosa
