After our trip to Nevada with the Pajero in December 2022, we had several requirement for future travel rigs.
* Have 4WD, similar in capabilities to the Pajero * Be cheap enough to leave in-country * Be able to sit up in bed
There is only one vehicle that met our requirements – the Delica L400, which is the minivan version of the Pajero.
The plan was to to do this in a year or two. Unfortunately, I’m addicted to projects, and Marta is unlikely to say “No, I don’t want a 4×4 camper van”.
Meet Delicat – 1999 L400 V6 Gas. Comes with a long list of interesting gremlinsThe basic build out. Bed folds up into sofa. A feature that was hard to build, and never got usedConstruction was delayed as Marta kept taking her van on trips. Springs are pretty tired, put airbags on the back axle.Pantry under the rear hatch. Used foam and fiberglass to make the shelving light. A bit overkill
Even in the southern USA, winter nights are long. The solution was surprisingly compact and elegant.

We never used this in Sofa Mode. Was awesome to watch a movie in bed, especially on the long December/January nights.
