After we left the first Delica in Baja California, the woman needed a new one
Meet DeliCan
She is 2000 Mitsubishi Delica, 4WD, right hand drive & has an awesome bumper, does she?
Time to rig her up
First we removed:
* All the chairs * Carpet
This time we chose to leave the under-carpet in place. Good learning from our first model.
We start with the easiest section, the frame for drawers, refrigerator and bed.
All of this would not be possible without tools and saws. Chester has them all. We also have a handy garage and a heater – helpful in Canadian never ending winter.
Let’s build a simple frame firstAt the left back corner an ingenious cutout to accommodate Delica’s wheel. Regularity is not a thing here…..On the left side Chester will attach a fridge. The size of the fridge constrains the design of the frame. The fridge will be on rails. It will function like a drawer. This is much better than Delica Version 1. In V1 our fridge was placed in a drawer. This is much better, so we think.Preparing to drill into the fridge…It worked like magic! Now let’s make some drawersAnd shelves…. Now we know why people who mess about with wood have so many clamps. These shelves will go inside the “living room”.Shelves now in the “living room”
Time to complete the floor
First Chester puts a mixture of rubber and glue on the floor. He had to lift the frame off the floor to do that. This not only makes it flat but also creates an noise barrier.
Final carpet is placed.
Attaching the Frame
The frame should not move even when experiencing high accelerations. Chester makes and welds brackets which are used to attach the frame to the vehicle. Only a couple are shown here, but there are several in different places.
The Bumper
Marta has been in Alberta for almost a quarter century, so she’s now entitled to drive around with a massive steel bumper. This is a weld-it-yourself kit from Coastal Offroad. 3/16″ plate seems a little overkill..This nice little 8000 lb winch from Vevor fit in like a gloveJust needs a gun rack, and she’ll be all set
The Kitchen
Getting an exact fit with back windowGlue shelf “columns” to the back plateAll made from 5mm plywood
Putting it all together
Nice to have a roof over your head when cookingStill missing a shelf, but good enough to go on a tripAccess to storage underneath
